It’s been a while since I’ve blogged and for those of you who did not know, it was because I was living in Shanghai for the past year and a half. Unfortunately a lot of sites are blocked in China: facebook; wordpress; twitter; gmail; dropbox; etc. Sure I could have used my VPN but it wasn’t always reliable. Now that I am back in Singapore, I can take delight in accelerated updates and the speed at which sites load.
China was an adventure! With all the new foods, sites, sounds and people, there was much to explore. The most challenging aspect was the language barrier. My husband and I spent a few months learning survival Chinese until we decided to leave; we knew how to direct a taxi, meet and greet, order food at a restaurant and most importantly, ask if there was any pork in that food – to which the answer was usually yes. 🙂
We met a lot of new friends and joined several meetups, including Expat Neighbors (for anyone who wants to socialise with not just expats but any English speakers in Shanghai) and The Shanghai Dolls Book Club. We adopted a rescue kitten who has savaged our leather furniture, and who will be joining us once he is cleared to travel. We laughed and we cried and we learned a lot about ourselves and the world we live in.
Now on to our next adventure! Hobbits welcome.
